When these tools help
Start with the AI token calculator when you have text and need a rough size estimate for prompt planning, context-window checks, or comparing shorter and longer versions. Use the AI cost calculator when you already have expected input and output token volumes and want to compare per-request, monthly, or provider-pricing scenarios.
A useful workflow is to estimate representative prompts and responses first, then multiply by realistic request volume and the prices shown by the provider you are evaluating. Keep input and output pricing separate when the provider charges different rates, and include repeated system instructions, tool output, or retrieved context if they are part of each request.
Both tools are planning aids. Token counts vary by model, tokenizer, language, formatting, and attached context, while actual cost depends on current provider prices, caching rules, batch discounts, and billing units. The calculators do not fetch live prices or reproduce an official tokenizer, and free text entered in the token tool is processed locally rather than sent to analytics.
