How it works

How to use

Enter your date of birth. The calculator applies the UK's legislated State Pension age timetable and shows both your State Pension age and the exact date you reach it.

Example

Someone born on 31 July 1960 is in the phase-in group, so their State Pension age is 66 years and 4 months, reached on 30 November 2026. Someone born on 10 March 1965 reaches it at 67, on 10 March 2032. Someone born on 1 January 1980 reaches it at 68, on 1 January 2048, under current legislation.

When it helps

Useful when planning ahead for retirement, alongside the savings goal calculator. Confirm the date on GOV.UK before making firm plans, since the timetable is reviewed regularly.

Limits and assumptions

Follows the current legislated timetable only, so a future change to the law would change the result. It does not check your National Insurance record or eligibility for the State Pension itself, and does not model the older pre-2020 rules for people born before 6 October 1954.

What do you want to do next?

FAQ

How is my State Pension age worked out?+

From your date of birth only. Born 6 October 1954 to 5 April 1960: 66. Born 6 April 1960 to 5 March 1961: 66 plus 1 to 11 months, depending on your birth month. Born 6 March 1961 to 5 April 1977: 67. Born 6 April 1977 to 5 April 1978: a set date between May 2044 and March 2046. Born on or after 6 April 1978: 68 under current legislation.

How do you work out my exact qualifying date?+

From the timetable in the Pensions Act 1995, Schedule 4, as amended by later Pensions Acts. Most people reach State Pension age on the birthday for their age. For the two phase-in groups (born 6 April 1960 to 5 March 1961, and 6 April 1977 to 5 April 1978) the law sets the age or date month by month, and the calculator follows those tables.

Is the rise to 68 definitely happening in 2044-2046?+

It's legislated, but the timing is covered by the government's regular State Pension age reviews, the third of which was launched in 2025. It could be brought forward, pushed back, or left as is — check GOV.UK for the latest position before relying on it.

Is this official government advice?+

No. This is based on publicly available UK legislation (the Pensions Act 1995 as amended, including the Pensions Act 2014), not financial or retirement advice. For decisions about your own retirement, check GOV.UK or speak to a regulated financial adviser.

Does this work if I wasn't born in the UK?+

The State Pension age itself only depends on your date of birth, so the result applies regardless of birthplace. Whether you actually qualify for a UK State Pension depends on your National Insurance contribution record, which this calculator doesn't check.
